Continuing its journey across the U.S. and Canada, the Architecture & Design Film Festival (ADFF) made a stop in Washington D.C. for a run at the National Building Museum, a perfect backdrop for the films that place focus on all areas of design and architecture. The opening night celebration included a screening of Mau, a film by brothers Benji and Jono Bergmann, that examines the career and creativity of designer Bruce Mau, who was on site for the viewing. Mau will make its official theatrical debut during NYCxDesign, in partnership with ADFF, at New York’s Angelika Film Center on May 13, 2022.
“Everything from womb to tomb is design. When you plan your day, you’re a designer. When you come up with a new idea at work, you’re a designer. When you figure out how to improve your relationships, or cook a dinner, you’re a designer. Design is the act of giving shape to our lives and our world. We are all designing all the time.”
– Bruce Mau
Mau’s impressive life has led him from a childhood in a remote region of Canada to a career as a world-class graphic designer and designer of the world. His unique genius and belief that design can instigate positive change has led to collaborations with global brands like Coca Cola and Disney and to monumental commissions to include the rebranding of nations like Guatemala and Denmark and a 1,000-year plan for Mecca, Islam’s holiest site. He also has worked on book and museum projects with living-legend architects like Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry. The film follows Mau on a journey through his beginnings, some of his biggest projects and collaborators to date, and his thought process, as he works to transform the world through the power of design.
Mau is the first feature by Benji and Jono Bergmann. It will be available for online viewing on June 7, 2022, via iTunes and Amazon.
