Getting access to the archives of a favorite textile company sounds like a dream come true for any designer. But for Ben Pentreath, an architectural interior designer, it was the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Pentreath was invited to collaborate with Morris & Co. to create a new collection that has deep roots in the venerable brand’s history. The line of 18 fabrics and 18 wallpapers is called the Queen Square Collection after the road on which the company’s first factory and showroom was located. The new designs include updated colorations of old patterns and pay homage to the creativity expressed in the Arts and Crafts movement.
“We’ve taken many original patterns and recolored them to cast [William Morris’] designs in a completely new light,” says Pentreath. The resulting collection is at once familiar and nostalgic, and completely of the moment with rich new colorways and updated patterns. Above all, it evokes a striking simplicity that was an ethos firmly upheld by William Morris and proves how good design can truly stand the test of time.
Notes Pentreath, “I’ve always loved the designs of William Morris, and we’ve used his timeless papers and fabrics in many of our decoration projects over the years. So, it was a wonderful experience to be let loose in the Morris & Co. archive.”
Queen Square Collection is available through Zoffany.
